The Impossible Dream

  • Of all the songs that I have steeped myself in over the past number of months, The Impossible Dream has received the most play. There are likely many versions, but the one that I listen to is by The Temptations. My daughter can attest to just how often I listen to this song, as she has had the pleasure, or misfortune, of being in the car with me when I have this one song on repeat. At full volume. Seriously. It can take me 20 minutes to drive from my house to the gym, and I can easily listen to this one song the entire way there and the entire way home. At full volume. Singing out loud.
Maybe this song is a little melodramatic. After all, my dream, my goal is to deadlift more than 319 pounds…hardly on the same level as unbearable sorrow, unrightable wrongs, and heavenly causes. But, my goal sometimes feels like the unreachable star, an impossible dream. To me. It doesn’t really matter if others don’t understand; this is my journey, after all. Yet, as big and impossible as the goal may sometimes feel, I really don’t think that it is unreachable. I believe that my goal is within reach, even if things don’t end up the way I hope.
To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go

To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star

This is my quest, to follow that star,
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far
To fight for the right without question or cause
To be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause

And I know if I’ll only be true to this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm when I’m laid to my rest

And the world will be better for this
That one man scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To fight the unbeatable foe, to reach the unreachable star
